“If you use a Samsung phone, you get bullied.” “If you don’t use an iPhone, you get bullied.” As children’s preference for iPhone continues to grow, Samsung’s sense of crisis is growing.

It turned out that the situation was even more serious not only at home but also abroad. In particular, the gap between Apple and Samsung Electronics’ smartphone market share in the US has widened to a record level. Local media analyzed that this is because of the iPhone preference among Generation Z (born after 1996) in the United States.

According to market research firm Canalys on the 12th (local time), the gap between Apple (59%) and Samsung Electronics (23%) in the North American smartphone market in the first quarter of this year was 36%. It is increasing from 17% in the first quarter of 2021 and 24% in the first quarter of last year to 36% in the first quarter of this year.

Apple’s iPhone market share has risen to an all-time high in the North American market with strong support from young people. Samsung, on the other hand, is declining.

Experts analyzed the cause of this gap as children’s excessive preference for iPhones. The Financial Times ( FT ) reported that “the younger generation in the United States is feeling the fear of being alienated from their peers if they do not use the iPhone.”

A typical example is the ‘iMessage’ function, which allows iPhone users to send and receive text messages. On the iPhone, text messages from non-iPhone users are displayed in a different color. iMessage has iPhone-specific emojis. Not only design and camera, but also ‘Airdrop’, a photo sharing service used by iPhone users, is cited as a reason why the younger generation prefers iPhone.

According to U.S. market research firm Atain, 83% of Gen Z in the U.S. said they owned an Apple iPhone last year. On the other hand, only 10% had a Samsung smartphone. FT analyzed, “Apple’s share in the US market was 35% until 2019, but it is thanks to the influence of Generation Z that it has exceeded 50% after 2022.”

Even in Korea, children’s preference for iPhone is getting worse. In a survey conducted by Gallup Korea last year, Apple iPhone (52%) accounted for the largest proportion of smartphones owned by teenagers and 20s. 44% of respondents said they use Samsung Galaxy.

Among teenagers, there is a strong perception that the image of Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy phone is a ‘jae phone’. As most parents buy inexpensive Galaxy products for their children, it is pointed out that the negative brand image among teenagers has hardened.

The industry believes that Samsung Electronics needs to improve its product and brand image in order to attract the younger generations who are focused on the iPhone, as in the case of the Galaxy Z Flip, a foldable phone that folds up and down.

The ‘Galaxy Z Flip’ is gaining popularity mainly among the younger generation. The new form factor and usability are evaluated as ‘hip’ among teenagers. There is also an expectation that the Galaxy Z Flip series will become a ‘key’ to capture the hearts of the younger generation.
