Jang Jun, Park Tae-jun, and others fail to win medals on the first day of the Paris World Taekwondo Grand Prix

The Taekwondo team, including men’s lightweight champion Jang Jun (Korea Gas Corporation), failed to win a medal on the first day at the 2023 World Taekwondo (WT) Grand Prix competition held as a test event for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Jang Jun and Park Tae-jun (Kyung Hee University) participated in the men’s 58kg class at a competition held in Levallois-Perret near Paris, France on the 1st (local time) and were eliminated in the quarterfinals and round of 16, respectively.

Taejun Park won the gold medal in the men’s 54kg class at the World Championships last June, but was eliminated early from this competition.

Sister athletes Kang Mir and Kang Bo-ra (Yeongcheon City Hall), who competed in the women’s 49kg class, both lost in the round of 32.

Areum Lee (Goyang City Hall) and Yujin Kim (Ulsan Metropolitan City Sports Council) were eliminated in the round of 16 and round of 32, respectively, in the women’s 57kg class.

This competition was a prelude held about a year before the Paris Olympics, and 255 athletes from 59 countries participated.

Korea dispatched a large number of leading players, including Jang Jun, Park Tae-jun, Park Woo-hyuk (Samsung S-One), Lee Ah-reum, and Lee Da-bin (Seoul City Hall).

The national team plans to experience the atmosphere of the Paris Olympics in advance through this competition and make a final inspection in preparation for the Hangzhou Asian Games, which will begin on the 23rd.
