Astronomical investment, but the reality is that PS is worried about being eliminated… NYM what to do?
The New York Mets have made an astronomical investment in StubHub to challenge for the pennant, but they’re not even guaranteed to make the postseason.
The New York Mets lost 1-5 against the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2023 Major League Baseball World Series at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S., on April 24. The Mets, who have lost three straight, are now 34-41 on the season. Their .453 winning percentage has dropped them to fourth place in the National League East.
Starting pitcher Senga Kodai took the loss after allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits in 5 1/3 innings with three walks and six strikeouts, but was silenced by his offense. The Mets offense managed just three hits against the Phillies pitching staff on the day.

The Mets are slipping out of contention. They are 14 games behind the National League East leader Atlanta Braves (48 wins, 27 losses, .640), eight games behind the second-place Miami Marlins (43 wins, 34 losses, .558), and five games behind third-place Philadelphia (39 wins, 36 losses, .520).
“The Mets are more likely to be caught by the Washington Nationals than by division-leading Atlanta,” the New York Post wrote earlier in the day. Washington is last in the National League East with a 28-47 record and a .373 winning percentage.
“Senga’s pitching on five days’ rest was ineffective, and he couldn’t overcome his teammates’ mistakes. The Mets have lost three in a row and are seven games out of a five-game winning streak,” predicting that the Mets will struggle to make the postseason.

Mets manager Buck Showalter also lamented the team’s current situation. “Guys made more mistakes under pressure,” he said, “I’m worried about only getting three hits. I’m worried about everything. But we’re trying to make perfect plays every day, every game.”
Last winter, the Mets spent an astronomical amount of money to acquire players. They signed internal free agents Edwin Diaz to a five-year, $120 million contract and Brandon Nimmo to an eight-year, $162 million contract, and bolstered their lineup by signing Justin Verlander to a two-year, $86.66 million contract, Jose Quintana to a two-year, $26 million contract, and Senga Kodai to a five-year, $75 million contract.

However, the return on investment appears to be slipping. Diaz and Quintana have been sidelined with injuries, and Verlander hasn’t lived up to expectations with a 2-4 record and 4.50 ERA in nine starts. Nemo is batting .278 (79-for-284) with eight home runs in 73 games, and Senga is 6-5 with a 3.52 ERA in 14 starts. It’s not the kind of performance the Mets were hoping for.
The Mets are ambitious and want to challenge for the pennant. But the reality is that they have to worry about missing the postseason. With more than half the season still to go, there’s still time for a turnaround. Let’s see if the Mets can bounce back.
